At the Michoacán sanctuaries — El Rosario, Sierra Chincua and Senguio — two independent press reports give 150 MXN per adult and 100 MXN per child aged 6–12. La Mesa, in the State of Mexico, charges about 80 MXN and 50 MXN. These are local fees set each season, not published in an official table we could find, so bring a little extra.
Sources: Mexican press reports, Nov 2025 and Jan 2026 (two agree on 150/100 MXN); under-5 rule from one report, Oct 2026.
The adult rate of 150 MXN applies at the three Michoacán sanctuaries; children aged 6–12 pay 100 MXN, and one recent report says children under 5 enter free. At La Mesa the adult rate covers everyone over 13, with 50 MXN for children aged 6–12. Fees are paid per person at the gate, and children need a ticket from age 6.

Fees are close across the reserve but not identical. The four sanctuaries listed for 2026–27 are El Rosario, Sierra Chincua, Senguio and La Mesa. Piedra Herrada near Valle de Bravo runs separately, and its tour operator quotes about US$13 per person. For Cerro Pelón and El Capulín we found no reliable current figure. Tap a sanctuary.

oyamel crowns full of butterfliesEl Rosario and Sierra Chincua are the sanctuaries most tours visit, and both charge the same 150 MXN adult rate. Senguio charges the same, and a press report adds a local guide fee of about 300 MXN there. All three sit inside the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, and both the US and UK governments warn against travel in Michoacán outside Morelia.
La Mesa is the cheapest listed sanctuary at about 80 MXN for adults. Piedra Herrada, the sanctuary on the Valle de Bravo day trip, announces its season separately; the tour leaves its entry to you, at about US$13 per person paid on site, and its 2026–27 opening was not confirmed in November 2026.
The ticket is only part of the day. The biggest extra is a horse, about 200 MXN each way at El Rosario and Sierra Chincua. Toilets cost a few pesos, and some sanctuaries charge for a local guide or road access. Most of these figures come from a single press report, so carry more cash than you expect to spend.

Local handlers wait near the entrances of El Rosario and Sierra Chincua and charge about 200 MXN each way, so a round trip on horseback costs more than the ticket itself. Guests on the El Rosario private tour still call the visit “very physical” even when riding, and at Piedra Herrada many visitors ride up and walk down. None of the tours includes a horse.
If you have a car, buying tickets at the gate is the cheapest way to visit. Most visitors from abroad join a tour instead, and most tours include the ticket. On the Sierra Chincua tour, entrance is listed as included but one guest paid 150 MXN in cash, so carry it anyway. The Valle de Bravo day trip leaves entry to you, about US$13.

With your own car and a group, the gate wins on price: four adults pay about 600 MXN in tickets between them. The cost you take on is the driving — about 3.5 hours each way from Mexico City on mountain roads in Michoacán, an area both the US and UK governments warn about — plus finding a guide at the entrance.
We found no official 2026–27 table of opening hours. Last season a press report gave Monday to Friday 9:00–15:00 and weekends 8:00–15:00 for Piedra Herrada and Cerro Pelón; older reports give 8:00–17:00 for the Michoacán side. Whatever the gate times, aim to reach the colony between about 11:00 and 15:00, when the butterflies fly.
The gates open in the morning, but the butterflies only start flying once the sun warms the clusters, usually from about 11:00. On the State of Mexico side last season the gates closed at 15:00, so a late start can leave you very little time. Tours from Mexico City pick you up between 6:00 and 8:00 for exactly this reason.
Best time of day →You buy monarch butterfly sanctuary tickets at the entrance, in cash, on the day. We found no official online sale for 2026–27. Bring pesos in small notes for the ticket, the horse and the toilets, as card payment is not something to count on in the mountains. If you would rather not handle any of it, book a tour that includes the ticket.
sanctuary entrance arch, El RosarioSmall notes and coins make every payment at the entrance easier: the ticket, a horse each way, the toilets and snacks at the market stalls. Carry them separately from larger notes, and keep a little extra in case a fee has gone up since the last report. On a tour with entry included you still need cash for the horse.
